PHP Script to check mail server status

I'd like to keep statistics on the status of a mail server I do not own (but use for my email). My first problem is figuring out a way in PHP to tell if the server is up or down. Once I have a way to do that it should be easy to store and track that info in a file and build statistics and graphs.

Any ideas?

you could use a cronjob and the php socket functions to see if you can connect to port 25 of the remote host.

Thanks, I think that's what I'll do! I looked up the php socket functions and the following code works pretty well, just need to write the info to a file, schedule it and I'm good!
