Amy,
Derrick mentioned that he made a script on a second day -> that's not unusual, however becoming proficient with php in two days (without having prior knowledge of other computer languages) is ludicrous. Hacking a few lines of php code is one thing, yet writing a well designed and thought off application is a different story. http://www.multicians.org/andrea.html
If you study hard, every day, for several hours (I'd say 5-6) along with other subjects, then in 2 months you should have a good and deep aquaintance with PHP. If you'll keep it up for about a year, then you'll internalize it -> it'll become like your native language. If you already internalized languages like C/C++, then chances are you'll internalize PHP several times faster.
Nobody says that it's an easy road. My friend has B.S. in Electrical Engineering, he took a ton of calculus in College and it is still not easy for him to be a PHP professional. But that's how it is -> good programmers are self-trained and that requires a lot of hard work, dedication, preseverence, and lots and lots of patience.
