execute php script with java script

I would like to execute a php script (that does something in the background) using an 'onload' command in the HTML body tag.

I presume that this will need some javascript. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so what Javascript would do the job?

The reason I want to do this is that all the pages in my site are HTML and some rank well in search engines, as such I don't want to rename all the files to .php files (which I realise is the easiest solution).

generally javascript executes on the client side ie the browser interprets the code and shows you the results. the same is not the case for php, which is executed on the server side and the results are sent to the client.

hence for your problem, the onload event works only for javascript/vbscript and you cannot put in php code. you may have to write a javascript code that does the same thing that your php code is supposed to do.

another option is calling your php page and passing the necessary parameters in the query string. this is specially helpful for counters and tracking. use the 1X1 GIF trick for this. you wont have to change the extension of your files also.

You could do this a lot easier in one of two ways....

1) Use Server-side-includes to run your PHP.
In your html file:
<!--#include virtual="/path/to/script.php"-->

In your httpd.conf:
<VirtualHost yourdomainname.co.uk www.yourdomainname.co.uk>
ServerName www.yourdomainname.co.uk
DocumentRoot /www/vhtdocs/yourdomainname
AddHandler server-parsed .html
</VirtualHost>

OR...........

2) Change your VirtualHost config for the domain you're concerned with to make .html files run through the PHP parser....

<VirtualHost yourdomainname.co.uk www.yourdomainname.co.uk>
ServerName www.yourdomainname.co.uk
DocumentRoot /www/vhtdocs/yourdomainname
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html
</VirtualHost>

Then you can use .html files with PHP in either way

1. Modern searchengines don't care about file extentions, they will index your .php page just as well as the html version.

2. The onload is executed after the page has been loaded, at which time you cannot change the content anymore using PHP.

3. Using onload doesn't work if javascript is disabled.
