WildCards in PHP

Hi,
I am doing a project in PHP and MySQL. I am a novice in PHP. For so long, I had no problem. Now, a problem has arised where i need to create SQL statements and the values to be substituted in them at runtime. i have been suggested to use wildcards. i want to know how i can use them to achieve what i want to?
