changing image type

Is it possible, using ImageMagick, to change an uploaded image file from one type to another, and then save it as the new file type? So for example if they upload a .jpg, .png or .bmp, I could change any of those to a .gif and save it as such?

Of course you can. ImageMagick comes with a program called convert that does this and a lot more. Try man convert to see the full options.

From php just do something like:

$newfile = "foo.gif";

exec("convert $uploaded_file $newfile");

Ok, cool... and will this work regardless of the type of image they're using, like I don't need to know what kind it is beforehand?
