arrays and style?

I'm having trouble assigning a style to the variables I'm trying to insert into my array. e.g.

$cell[] = "<B><a href=\"index.php\">Home</a></B>";
works fine, but

$var = "Home";
$cell[] = <B><a href=\"index.php\">$var</a></B>;
doesn't work

Can someone please tell me if this is allowed and if it is please give me the correct syntax. Thank you.

$cell[] = <a href=\"index.php\">$var</a>;
you're missing quotes, and $var is better places outside the quotes:

$cell[] = "<a href=\"index.php\">".$var."</a>";
