I'm new to PHP, and don't really know beans, but... I've seen sites have an address like "http://www.somewhere.com/file.php?name=bob" and I don't understand how to use the name=bob part of it. How do I use that, and how do I get scripts to work with it?
As I understand it, the variable $name with the value of 'bob' is made available to the file 'file.php'.
So, in 'file.php', you can key off that value, e.g.
if ($name == 'bob') { do something... } else { do something else ... }
Nothing beats the manual: http://www.php.net/manual/en/language.variables.external.php
Note: vars passed through the URL are also sent using the GET method.
Ahhh, that's how that's done. I've also seen sites where putting the variable in the URL affects the text output of the page. This is a rather interesting example, but it's the only one I could come up with off the top of my head: http://strangereports.com/tpthiefv.php?fname=Sam&lname=A&city=Middle+of+Nowhere&sex=man All of those are inserted directly into the text of the page. This is more of what I was looking to accomplish.
I think that is because they used the get method rather than the post method. What does is matter if you can see in in the url or not?
