variable names

Is there a proper way to make your variables in PHP. Everyone on this form seems to have a different method.

1 $myVariable
2 $MyVariable
3 $my_variable
4 $My_varialbe

I know that they all work the same but is there a right and wrong way to do it?

I use $myVariable for variables and &myVariable_array for arrays so that my arrays always stand out but that's just me.

Everyone's got their own naming conventions. Readability is the goal but there are no set rules.

Vincent likes prepending the variable name with a lower-case identifier like this:

$sMyvar for strings
$aMyvar for arrays
$iMyVar for numeric
and so on.

I prefer appending like this:

$myvar_st for strings
$myvar_in for numeric
$myvar_ar for arrays
$myvar_rs for result sets

and so on.

Thanks for the post. Decisions, decisions, decisions... My methods work for me but I was hoping for a universal standard so that any programer could look at my script a couple years down the line and know exactly what kind of info is stored in each variable. Both you and Vincent have a style that will be clear enough for anyone that knows anything about programming but it would be nice if there was a standard that was set in stone.
