Is it possible to run some kind of smooth on a jpg that is created with imagecopyresized() or createJPG() ?
All my images come out looking @!#$, even at high quality.
any help would be greatly appreciated as im clutching at straws here.

Take a look at http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php for a list of PHPs image functions. However, I suspect that there is something else wrong with your algorithm, as I have never had any problems with bad image quality. Please post your resize code!
I actually realised that when I hurridly jammed all the images through Fireworks they were optimised a little too much..... which is why they look so bad.......
