read a bit about the two things, or ask more specific questions, like:
-what are you going to do?
-why are you thinking of PHP / XML?
-what makes it "worth a go" -what do you want to achieve?

1) What is XML exactly (Begginng PHP made my head spin)

2) I would like to make a content management system, or just make my site =)

3) Is it faster/better ? (easier to work with, ie to make new pages)

My next question has nothing to do with XML, but somewhere I read the OOP side of PHP runs faster than normal non OOP code. Is this true ?

2) Go for it. It's only software, if you don't like it you can always change it.

At this point I wouldn't worry too much about OO vs non-OO performance. When you start getting over 1,000,000 page hits a day you might need to look at it ;o)

One important thing to remember is that XML was designed to allow a 'standardized' method for exchanging data.

That means: XML is usefull if you want to give your data to someone else without having to tell that person exactly what the format of your data is (think of comma-delimited files). XML is completely and utterly useless if you are just using it internally inside your application. Some databases allow you to request data in XML format, so that a query to the database actually returns XML. This sounds way cool, but it only makes sense if you are going to send that data on to a third-party. For internal use it is ofcourse complete bllcks, wasting a sh*t load of resources for no purpose whatsoever.

XML is for sending and receiving data to and from applications that you don't/can't control.
