Mail question, mass e-mailing

Hi all, I already have a script where a person can input their e-mail address. The script also verifies that the e-mail address is entered correctly before it submits. I have a script that will mass e-mail all of these addresses.

My question:
What if the email address is no longer valid(the person changed their email address, or gave me one that doesnt exist) Of course that email wont be sent. How can i track all emails that get bounced back?

Simple: check your inbox.

Make a script that will read the inbox to check for bounce messages. If you have control over your mailserver you can also configure the mail to be delivered directly to a script (PHP/sh/perl or whatever) for processing.

How exactly would that be done? I've been trying to figure out some way to send directly mail feedback to PHP scripts, but haven't come up with anything yet. Could you please expand just a little on the subject?

It's different for every mail-daemon/client combo.

On unix, sendmail lets you use a .forward file in the homedirectory of the recipient to pipe emaildata to a script. (check with the sendmail manual, this can be tricky/dangerous!)

If you are on un*x machines, you can also setup procmail (http://www.procmail.org/) which is very powerfull at processing incoming email.
