font detect

hi i'm developing a site using bangla font. So if browser want to browse that site he /she has to ahve that font in his/her machine. If that font willnot available their machine there will be an option to download that fornt. Now I want a script i don't know is that possible or not.. is there any script which will first search browser's machine and the font will be available... the site will open without giving any alert but if the font is not available there will be an alert boxt or anything which will show 'this site requires bangla font, please doenload the fonts from here' .... please help me...

sounds like that is more trouble that it is worth... you need to take all OS's into account and the fact that people might put fonts into different directories...

if its really that important you could use flash for your text and make it selectable (some kinda option in flash 5)

It is very annoying to the user. Are you sure you really really really really have to use that particular font?

Depending on what you intend to show, you could use a image instead of actual text.

Don't use special fonts, use the defaults.

ye s i know this is better to use default font but my client want to use special fonts... so is it possible to detect font when the first page starts to open..

Not with PHP, that's for sure. Maybe with Javascript, but then I'm just guessing.

Maybe you should try again to convince your client of not using it. I, for one, never heard about that font in my life. Probably 95% of all visitors will have to download the darned font, so just make the download option visible to everyone. You know, like those horrible sites that demand that you install Flash or Shockwave before letting you in.

Whenever I see one of those, I just walk away...

I think you'd do well to convince your client not to use a special font because a) it will cost a extra to implement, and b) his web-visitors will hate him for it, specially the poor modem users (they are still the majority) who are forced to spend more time online downloading and installing a font that they only need to view 3-4 pages on that website, which would be just as readable (if not more readable) with the default fonts.
