php 4.1.1 script updater?

does anyone know any easy way to update php code so that it will work within php 4.1.1?

the change to the varibles so that (!empty isset, or declaring the varibles is doing me head in!

being a relative newbie to php, this abrupt, largely undocumented at present change is making it incredibly difficult to learn/develop anything
