"Blind" send e-mail

I use an e-mail program called Calypso, that has a "blind send" feature. Apparently, it is proprietary and patented technology, but I am not sure. What it does is send e-mail messages that don't show the address of the recipients in the headers. You can have it show just the address of the recipient even if you cc other people or can have the address completely replaced by their aliases, showing no address at all. Can that be achieved with PHP?

What if I had only one recipient?

But I want to hide the recipient's address from the headers. Only the alias is supposed to show.

Q: why would you want to hide the address that you are sending the message to? You know where it's going, and they know what their email adress is, so what's the point?

Believe it or not, that question did cross my mind. But then I thought it would be worth asking anyway, for the sake of knowing how to have better control of the headers.

Once I saw a freeware app that stood between the e-mail program and the SMTP, acting as a filter, so you could actually filter, search and replace whatever your e-mail program put in the headers. So I thought: I can make my own headers in PHP, but I cannot hide the recipient's e-mail address like Calypso.

More like a case study, actually.

Have you tried putting the recipient address like this:

Vincent <[e-mail]>
