Temp message while DB querying

Hi,

I've notice at http://www.visualbasicforum.com - there is a message displayed as HTML while the site is querying our search. Once the search is completed, the message is changed to display the search result automatically.

Anyone knows how this is done? The site runs PHP

Use an intermediate page with javascript.

When the user clicks 'search', use javascript on the searchpage opens a new window that says 'please wait' and loads tha actual query page in the 'parent' window. Once the query is complete, the 'parent' uses javascript to close the 'child' window.

But it appears on the same window, as if the scripts redirects you to the search result once the search is complete.

I don't think it's such an easy task coz if it is, why isn't most of the web site using this technique?

You can use a seperate window or the same window, whatever you like.

Well, why should they use it? Most searches take less than a second to do, so loading a 'please wait' message just makes it a lot slower, and most users are smart enough to know that when they press 'search' it may take a few seconds to get a result.

if i remember correctly its done using a multipart mime document. the first part of the mime document is sent saying please wait. needs to be larger than 256 bytes for IE to render the page. then when the search results is sent. make sure the content-type is set as text/html.

You can also just load the intermediate page that says "please wait", and then link straight to the results page.
Browsers only replace the 'old' page with the new page when they start receiving data from the new page. If you use output-buffering in PHP, you can keep the browser waiting for data untill the results are ready, which will make the browser display the "please wait" message until the search is complete.

But again, this is something you normally don't need/want to do. Users already have to wait for the search, it's not nice to make them wait for a message that is just telling them to wait some more :-)
