Dynamic Pages based on URL Directories

I have been creating pages with php using variables:

www.site.com/page.php?page=content

but I have come accross a number of sites that use php and is based on directories:

www.site.com/dir/topic/content

I have tried doing this my self buy putting full IMG SRC links in my template file but I have seen sites that don't need to do this.

Their url could be www.site.com/dir/topic/content/page but the image links are pointing to /images/file.jpg which is really www.site.com/images/file.jpg.

Not sure if Im making any sence or not but I was wondering how this template style of dynamic pages work.

Well there are 2 ways that I can think to do what you want.

One would be to have your template engine in each directory, and based upon location build the page desired.

Second is to use ForceType in an htaccess file. This would basically tell apache to parse anytype of file in the below directories as php. We do this for our dynamic generation of our news sites. Each pseudo-directory is treated as a key to identify what should be displayed.

ie.

/news/News/2002021842/

news is the actual php file that is parsed.

/News/2002021842/ are treated as variables.

News being the section identifier and 2002021842 being the story identifier.

But wouldn't that look for an index file in /news/News/2002021842/

ex: /news/News/2002021842/index.php

So really News/2002021942 is not a directory at all

Would there be a way to declair the root directory to start in?

ex:

I am in www.site.com/sub/dir/page/index.php
but when I say img src = images/file.gif it really goes to www.site.com/images/file.gif instead of www.site.com/sub/dir/page/images/file.gif

If you just want a root image directory, you don't really need to set up anything special or declair special veriables. You just need to set it up as: <img src="/images/img.jpg"> The / tells it to start at the root.

as for looking for an index.php, news is actually a file so the directory tree would stop there and everything after would be considered an argument.
