Connecting to MySQL on remote server

My ISP has PHP 4 and MySQL installed.
I wondered what should I ask my ISP to get access to the MySQL database to populate it? Is there remote software which can do this and I just need to location? I really don't know where to start with this problem. I have plenty of information for if MySQL and PHP was installed on my server but nothing for connecting remotely. ie. via. ftp, etc

The only difference between connecting locally and remote is that you use a different hostname.

But note that no sane ISP will ever allow you to access your database through MySQL directly. Most likely you'll have to make an ASCII dump of your database (read about mysqldump) and upload that (again: read about mysqldump)

The ISP that I'm with has a 'start database' function on the config screen. If you're ultimately stuck on this issue, they should have a help desk dude who'll be more than happy to answer your question if your e-mail him. My ISP has an online database config utility. There's a really good one at

all you need is the info regarding your host, password etc. You should be able to get that from your ISP.
