PHP log in

I need a little advice PLEASE!
On our corporate website we wish to allow our clients to log in and check the progress of work currently being done. A username and password needs to be verified and once approved direct them to a specific section only viewable to them and not other clients. I have a little PHP knowledge but not enough to complete this task. Is there a script site out there with examples/downloadable code for me to modify and use?
