Your opinion on storing images in mysql?

Some say it is ok, mysql can handle the load, some swear it off. I am trying to determine what limits I can put mysql to if I insert images into mysql. The most I can see per month is 1000 at a time and 1000 daily visitors

But I am hesitant to do this, instead considering transfering the image to a folder and having mysql just point to the images. What would you suggest, and does anybody know a 'limit' if there is such a thing documented, as to how much mysql can handle if one inserts images into the db?

From the mySQL docs
"When using a normal Web server setup, images should be stored as files. That is, store only a file reference in the
database. The main reason for this is that a normal Web server is much better at caching files than database contents.
So it it's much easier to get a fast system if you are using files. "

so it seems most agree to keep image in the directories
