resizing images before submitting them

This isn't directly php related, but would it be possible to resize images at the client side before sending them to the server. I will be setting up a site to let people submit their own photos, but I'm worried people would send in huge full res files and my server would have to resize them. That would be a waste of bandwidth since I only need the images to be 800X600. Yes, I know it would be best if I just told them to resize them on their own first before submitting them, but not everyone knows how so I though that maybe there's a way to have their computer resize it automatically before submitting it. Think that's possible?

Not on the client side (if not using a applet or a ActiveX component). You could check the size of the image on the server and if it is to big tell the user that the upload failed because of this and that and ask him/her to scale the image and try again.

only way to do this is using something like a client side java applet.
