PHP Application vs. Portals

I have looked a bit at Geeklog and PHPnuke, as I am interested in whether it is feasible to use these for a web application, not a news portal as such.
That is: I am interested in having an architechture given, and only concentrate on coding plug-ins for the architechture, not having to worry about user validation, GUI and all the other boring stuff :-).

What are your experiences in terms of:
-extensibility?
-security?
-performance?
-administration?
-language setup/switching?

If I am following the wrong track and should be looking elsewhere, please guide me (URL's would be nice 😉.

Have you seen phplib? (phplib.sourceforge.net) It isn't quite the same thing as PHPnuke, but gives you a user authentication system, db abstraction layer, templates, and a bunch of other things. I use it, find it works great and is very easy to code with/for.
