Currency Cleaner

Just wondering if anyone out there
can paste up a fuction that cleans a currency string like '$15.00 xxx' and makes it '15.00'

$currency = "\$15.00 USD";
eregi("([0-9]+\.[0-9]+)", $currency, $regs);
print $regs[1];
