I suggest you call Earthlink and find out whether or not they've put you on a server compiled with PHP. I'm sure this is most likely a requested feature, since you cannot get it to parse the php.
I had to inform my hostserver I wanted to be placed on a PHP-box when I first started with PHP. Now of course I host with companies that are exclusively php.
It may do you better to find a hosting company, because on average Earthlink hosting cost are higher.
