how can I match {\*\??

Hello to everybody!

I am familiar with simple regular expression but found a problem I can't expalain to myself:

I have a string similar to this:
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\uc1{*\panose 02020603050405020304}...
And I want to trip out everything from {*\ to }

I tryied following:
"/({\*\)[^}{]*?}/"

but I get a
Warning: Compilation failed: missing ) at offset 19

Next attemp was
"/({\.\)[^}{]*?}/"
Who matches not only {*\ but also {\i\, {\b\ ecc...

But if I try
// "/([{]\*\)[^}{]*?}/"
I find only {\ but not {* what will match also {.....}

To my mind the first should give the correct result, I can't explain the warning I get....
Can anyone help me please?

$str = '{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\uc1{*\panose 02020603050405020304}';

eregi("{[\]*[\](.*)}", $str, $m);
print $m[1];

Could you please explain me why \ needs to be written as [\] ?
I only tried [\], I can't figure out why I need 3 of them....
