count characters in KB/MB??

hi all,

I have got field called user_message in my MYSQL databse, what I want to do is I want to count the user_message feild in KILOBYTES mean that feild should not be exceeding more than 2 MB ?? how could I do that ??

is there any PHP/MYSql function avialable ??
