In your httpd.conf (usually in the ~/apache/conf/ directory) there is a line in there called DirectoryIndex (one word). Add whatever filenames you want to be your default pages. In my httpd.conf it looks like:
DirectoryIndex index.php index.php4 index.php3 index.phtml index.phtm index.html
In this instance, if I had two files in the direcotyr, index.php and index.html, index.php would be displayed since it is before index.html in my configuration line.
Remember to restart apache after your finished editing.
