mysql search and total rows in table?

Is it possible to do a query that will return only those rows that meet a condition and still get the total number of rows of the table returned aswell?

Or do I need to run two seperate query\'s?

Rather than asking if it's impossible, I'd ask which is most efficient in terms of using the dbms and your time.

I'd guess that two queries wouldn't put much more load on the database server, and it would be a lot easier to code, debug, and maintain then one query trying to do two unrelated things.

not much experience with mysql yet. I thought perhaps there is function that returns it automatically like mysql_insert_id()does after an insert.
