PHP SESSIONS

im new to php and linux. i want to use sessions in my pages.
both for authenticating users and retaining values throughout the time the user is logged in.

i looked at many sites for php session tutorials but cant find a good comprehensive one which covers everything.

Please point me in the right direction.
Any help is appreciated.
