Linux php configuration

I've just installed red hat linux 7.2 and I can't get php to work with apache. I installed EVERYTHING that comes with linux, even the stuff I don't need, just to make sure I got the necessary support for php, mysql, and apache. But php just won't work. what am I doing wrong???? help please!!

I too have installed RH7.2 and am also new to configuring apps on the Linux platform, and also ran into trouble getting PHP to fire up first time. Please could you say what is happening exactly, I'm guessing that either a) when you browse to the newly created index.php file, which will contain the following <? phpinfo(); ?> on your server, you are seeing plain text, or b) when you browse to the same file, your browser asks you where you would like to save the file to, or c) your browser refuses the connection.
Let us know what it is doing and I'll see if I can help at all.

hi Greg.
when I browse to my test.php file I see the source code <? phpinfo; ?> and nothing else.
I have noticed in the php.ini file the doc_root was not set. I pointed it to my server's home directory. The .ini file is probably wrong in a few other places, but I'm afraid to mess with it b/c I don't know what I am doing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Michael,
it sounds like you may need to make a modification to the httpd.conf file in the conf folder of Apache. (If this is the default installation, it should be in /etc/httpd/conf)

Assuming PHP has been compiled as a DSO (Dynamic Shared Object) then I believe you need to add or look for and uncomment the following lines >>

#

And for PHP4.x, use:

#
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

Save this then restart Apache.

Should do the trick.

I've tried installing and configuring PHP4,Apache1.3x,and MySQL3.22.32 from the .tar.gz files;after several tries I PHP kept crashing on the "make" command stating something like PHP4,no such file or directory!I suspect there's something wrong with the following command from the book:./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache_1.3.x --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a.
I only have about 6 weeks Linux experience,so you can see my predicament.Please help!
