mysql.sock error

Hey. I have read the past questions and don't understand. I have just downloaded mysql.tar.gz got it untared to root/mysql/ then I cd'ed into the folder and typed ./configure it told me that I needed to type in ./bin/mysqladmin -u root -p password 'newpassword' so I did...Then it asked me for a new password. Well I put one in and it said it cannot connect to the localhost and that make sure that mysqld is running. Well mysqld will not run! I typed in ./bin/mysqld --- also mysql both had mysqld shut down! Said something about a mysql.sock error. Make sure that its on the system. Well 1. How do I find mysql.sock and 2. Once I do find it where is it looking for it? Can someone explain how to install MySQL on Linux? Perferbly Slackware or BSD. But RH will work also. Thank you soo much in advance.

If you don't have a Linux manual or MySQL manual on hand, check out:

But what really disturbs me here is that I only see you running the ./configure command

Did you run
./make
./make test (optionally)
./make install

...if you didn't, then mysqld was never installed.

Then what does the ./configure do? And no I don't have a manual on hand.
