Ping users to determine if they are on?

Hello all,

Anyone know how I could determine if someone is actually viewing my website AFTER logging in, in real time or close to it?? In other words....if they are "Currently Logged in."

Would some kind of Ping work? I'm not sure how to use that either if it would.

The only way I can think of doing something like that is make a table in a database that stores something like a username and last accessed field. Then when ever a person hits a page after they logged in update the last accessed field. Then set up some type of cronjob that deletes any rows that are how every minutes old. This is not real time or close but it is in the ball park.
