Password protect my directory

I'm testing my site now and have it set-up on my localhost. But I only want a few people having access to the site. So I want to password protct it so only a few people can view the site. I want to protect the whole site, meaning all my directorys in it.

I have a mysql database if that will help me.

What is the best way to protect my site? I have tried alot of different scripts out there but most of them I have been able to by-pass or didn't work at all.

why dont you give people who can access your site cookies. everyone with the cookie can view it. every page should check for the cookie. It could be a header include maybe?

I do know what cookies are. I do know how to include other files. But I don't understand how to do what you said. I thought that cookies just stored info about the site to make it load faster. What would I have to do to do what you said? and how secure would it be? Would it be possible to view the site without the cookies?

Why not just use the password protection that comes with your web server's control panel? It's usually pretty simple to do this, depending upon who your host is.

Most web hosts will allow you to set up different passwords for different users for any folder, etc.
