Really there isn't much one can do in the way of help. Here are somethings to consider or question.
1) ODBC does exist for the 'nix environment. What db are you using?
2) How big do you plan or hope this site to get? What does it do? What database are you using?
3) What db's are available to you from your host?
How long have you had this host? Did you start doing the development THEN find a host? If that's the case, make sure from now on that your hosts environment is as close to your development environment as possible. In that way, you avoid little suprises like this one. :-(
