need help - regular expression experts

Hi,

I have an file with alot of text and would like to change all parts that have:

src="several directories/etc/etc/xyz.jpg"

to just this:

src="images/xyz.jpg"

in other words I want to change everything within the quotes to just the name of the image with the directory "images/" tacked on.

the xyz.jpg part could be any image name and have extensions like .gif,.jpg,.bmp,.png

Any help is appreciated very much. RTFM is helpful advice but I am a pea brain, I admit it.

my proposal is:

$newstring = ereg_replace(" src=\"/?([a-zA-Z0-9]+/)*([a-zA-Z0-9]+.[a-zA-Z]+)\"", "src=\"images/\2\"", $oldstring);

NOT bound to special image-suffixes yet! Assumes your directory- and filenames don't contain any special chars.
