PHP VS other language.

I have get to know that PHP is indeed a powerful language but I'm wondering about it's performance, speed on processing, portability.

Compare it with Coldfusion, ASP, JSP, Perl and etc..

Which are the languages that have the best result for Speed on Processing, Portability and Easiest to use.

Or is there any sites that show their performances...

PHP very fast, good portability, easy to learn

ASP fast, need extra components for port to non MS system ( chilisoft etc), easy to learn esp. if you know VB

Perl, fast, good portability, harder to learn more complex.

CF, fast, need extra components (but comes with product, CF server) Tag based fairly easy to learn....

Personally prefer either ASP or PHP....covers both OS (MS or Unix) both have good development tools, resources and most importantly are widely available on hosts

i agree with bastien on just about all points. jsp is an ok alternative as well, but if this is for a smaller site, i'd recommend php, especially if you don't already know java (i'd argue that php is quicker to learn and implement). dunno if you are hosting on someone else's machine or if you already have your own, but another advantage of php (over asp) is that you won't have to commit to a windows machine or to obtaining some 3rd party porting solution.

I agree with both of the above. I'm just finishing a new site that is 100% php and mysql. I did the development on W2K, apache, php 4.1.x and mysql. The production version is linux, apache, php 4.0.x and mysql. I didn't have a single problem between W2K and linux.

My only additional comment is that ASP and Perl are a bit more mature. I would like to see some more progression in php such as the LWP library for Perl or the new .NET form controls. I'm sure that php will get there but the others have been around a bit longer (or have more MS resources to throw at it).
