Advantages of custom session handelers?

I have just read the article on this site about custom session handelers. It showed how you could store session data in a mysql database.

I have built my own forum that uses sessions, would there be any advantages for me in storing session data in a database?

The only advantage of using custom session handlers is that you can make the handlers do things that the default handlers cannot.

If the default handlers are sufficient for your needs, then by all means use them.

One of the biggest uses of custom session handlers is where you are running a web farm and have multiple servers handling requests. You would need to keep session information in a db (or as hidden variables in a post from each page) since each request might go to a different sever in a farm.

If you aren't running a farm (web) and don't have any special requirements, then php sessions should serve you well.

Thanks, I see exactly what you mean. I only run one server and have no extra needs so I will stick with the native functions.
