3 Quick Questions

You ever have a few questions about something that should be quick and easy to look up in the documentation but isn't? And then you keep looking and you simply can't find the simple thing you are looking for? That's why I turn to you gentlemen and ladies:

1) What is the line continuation character in PHP. For readability of code how do I continue a string onto a new line

in asp its sVar = "blahalalballalablhabl" &_
"blah blah."

What is the equivalent in PHP?

2) There is a rumor that you can do:
getenv("$REMOTE_HOST") in PHP but I can't get that to work and I suspect it's crap. instead I'm using gethostbyaddr(IP). Can someone confirm that I am doing it the right way and am not stupid.

3) Can anyone remember Elvis's birthday?

use the period ( '.' )
example: echo $myVar . "<br>" . $marVar2 . "<br>";
here is what i use:
if (getenv(HTTP_CLIENT_IP)){
$ip=gethostbyaddr(getenv(HTTP_CLIENT_IP));
}
else {
$ip=gethostbyaddr(getenv(REMOTE_ADDR));
}
$browser = getenv(HTTP_USER_AGENT);

Kyle you rule. And you have confirmed that "$REMOTE_HOST" does not exist as a variable. Which I figured all along. Just always reading on the web where people are like just use $REMOTE_HOST. blah blah.

However as to the "." can I use that to break a long line up onto different lines in my editor?

like blah blah .
(newline in editor) blah blah
?

Thanks much. Is that the only way to do it in PHP? That sort of sucks. I want my
"&_". Oh well. I'm done with ASP, its time to stop looking over my shoulder.

PHP does everything else so much better that I'll gladly sacrifice "&_" to get the rest.

something like that? i don't understand your question otherwise. the '.' is just like the '+' or '-' key .. think

$myVar -= $number;
same as:
$myVar = $myVar - $number;

what is the &_'s significance beyond concatenating (which is what the period does)?

"&_" isn't concatenation. It tells the intrepeter that the line is continued onto the next line. Very useful when writing a long SQL query that you want broken up onto seperate lines for readability
