deleting session variables

okay, i have a working site that if a user clicks on the logout link, it will log him off, delete session variables and delete some temp stuff from a database. so the question is, if the user does not click on the logout link, how can i have it delete the stuff and not have to keep a bunch of junk in my database? i've thought of keeping a record of the time the users login, and delete depending on how long it's been since they got to the site. what do you think? good or bad idea? if not good, do you know of any other way to do this?

I currently handle it like this.

I set my temporary session folder to delete anything over 30 minutes old (inactive), and clean my temp database table every 24 hours.

This system has been working very well for me. Do as you were thinking and keep a log_time of the users activity. After a certain time just remove thier junk from the DB.

Read the php manual about sessions, PHP cleans these files up by itself.
