Improve gethostbyaddr() performance?

I have a table of IP which need to convert them all to IPs, and the list is big (thousands of distinct IPs)

So is there any method to improve the processing of such a list?

run bind locally. process during off peak hours.

Why would running BIND locally help with this? I already have cronjobs process the list during off peak hours but still.
