e-mail string control

I have a rather simpler problem but since I am new for the php I had the only choice to ask this to you.

I need to control the e-mail address entered into a form if it is in the correct format or not. you know it,shouldinclude @ etc. I know I have to use ereg bu t I don't hav ethe full idea. Also I want to raise the error statement before the page is redirected to the one written in the "action" place.
