How to check if an image-file does exist

Hi there...I need a way to check if an image file with a specific name does exist on my server. I did a review-module for records and I want to display the cover-artwork if there is an image on the server that is equal to the ID of the DB-entry...if not - I want to display a transparent gif...just to explain what I want to do...how to?

Argh...I did...and it works...damn...I could remember that I tried that function and that it didn't work for any reason...can't remember...something concerning "does not work with remote-files...blabla" - @!#$...ok...thank you...
