Chat rooms advice

Hello all
I made a chat room in php using a text file. However the page works by constantly refreshing so its totally screwing up the site statistics. Also i cant use java for security reasons.
What i want to make is a customer support page where its one on one. You will be told you are number 2 in a q of 4 etc.
Any one done anything like tis before or have any advive about what direction to look in to next ?

I sorted this problem out using Flash. I made a flash chat room and used a php flash engine. However, i am not sure if this will solve the stat problem but it does stop the page going blank every 2secs on slow machines.
