difference between 2 queries

$query="insert into products values('','$sku','$name',$price,$category,'$shortdesc','$longdesc','$web',$sale,'$smallimage','$bigimage')";

$smallimage and $bigimage are both longblobs, how come when I remove the two and replace them with '' my insert works but when I try with $smallimage and $bigimage, it does not?

blobs are like files, need to be uploaded to server...use <form enctype="multipart/form-data">

but that aside...best pratices dictate never store images in DB, poor performance and DB bloat are a result. better to store path to image and place image in folder on server...
