Help with adding up data

I have a page where people can choose different opions for products, Similiar to the www.dell.com page where you can customize a computer system. Basically you can pick this processor with this hard drive and this monitor and such. THere is a button that says update price. I want my customers to be able to update the price of the item BEFORE adding it to the cart. They do it with JAVA but my hosting provider suggested PHP. My accoutn is set up for PHP 4. I have ZERO programming expereince. DOes this even seem possible?

It shouldn't be a problem if you have programming experience.

Each item the user selects has a name and a value associated with it. You just add up the values which have been selected.

Problem comes with the design and if you're not a programmer how were you going to do your site even without the adding up?
