This isn't completely relevant to PHP. Sorry for that. Send flames directly to my email, don't post them as replies, please.
I'm working on a PHP/HTML front end for indexing what were originally word documents. As it stands now, I have the users save the document from within Word as an HTML file. This is annoying because Microsoft doesn't like to comply with standards, and it's own web browser doesn't even seem to want to read all of the tags. Plus it tries to guess what the user is thinking and inserts random h1's and h2's and such. The outcome is that when it's displayed in the web browser, it doesn't look like it's supposed to.
What I'm looking for, then, is one of the following:
1) (preferably) a word processing application that could somehow import Word docs (whether it be cut and paste or file>open doesn't matter to me as long as it retains the basic formatting; ie, underline, bold, italic, list indenting, font).
2) an application that will convert from Word documents or Word html files into very simple html files (without all the MS-dhtml crap microsoft adds). This is probably not possible, since then the program would have to second-guess Word AND the user in order to undo some of Word's mistakes.
There are two catches. The first is that it needs to be really, really easy. It's for a structural engineering firm, and while they're technically considered geeks they don't all know a great deal about computers, nor do they want to learn. The second is that it needs to look professional, or my boss won't give me permission to distribute it to the employees (ie, it cannot look at all hack-and-slash like some freeware does). Oh yeah, and one more...it has to be freeware.
Thanks in advance for everything!
