Newbie Stupid Question

Hi All,
I think I'm in the right place.
I have a stupid question concerning installing/running PostgreSQL on a duel booted Windows 98/Red Hat Linux PC. I just want to experiment/play without interfering with real dbs so I just want this to work on my system not connected to any outside server. No suprise when I finally get to the step to createdb testdb that I get the error:

Is the sverer running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket
"tmp/.S.PGSQL.5432"?
createdb: database creation failed

I'm almost there!

It means, that postgreSQL is not running or is not running wiht -i parameter. Did you run the postmaster ? You can check it with ps -axf | grep postmaster.

Hi Zdenek Habala,
I did finally get it to run, but I will double check the i parameter.
I checked to see if it is one of the processes running and it was. Also, I checked to see if I could start it again, but it gives me the message that a postmaster is already runnning. That is a good sign, however, I'm now in the last step, but it won't let me create the database. It says I don't have permissions even though I'm postgres. I thought postgres is the default superuser for PostgreSQL. I have printed out your message and will check this tonight. Thank you so much for ans. my email. 🙂
