text in dynamic images

Hi,
I'm trying to plot some dynamic graphs. my ISP does not have fonts installed - I asked they gave the following reply

'there are no fonts installed as standard as such. You can upload your own truetype fonts but would have to aware of any copyright issues in terms of re-using/publishing with them. This is something you would need to research yourself.'

so can anyone help? Are fonts freely available. Are there unix specific fonts, are all ttf files the same? Are there copyright restrictions on standard fonts, Times arial etc

Yes, fonts are freely available, and yes, there are unix specific fonts as well as windows specific fonts. Most windows fonts are ttf format. And there are restrictions on some fonts, most sites in which you can get free fonts have copyright and re-publishing information posted with the download, if it doesn't, dont use the fonts because you're liable.
