Is JSP any faster than PHP?

I don't know, but I think PHP community is much bigger than JSP community !

Since JSP compiles a class to run in the servlet engine it can slow down in some cases. Java is often quite slow being a virtual machine system using byte encoded ( portable ) classes. Once the servlet engine has this class resident in memory the speed isn\'t that bad. PHP on the other hand uses the Zend engine which is extemely fast during inital and subsequent requests.

I read some old posts back in 2000 on this board on php vs jsp ... so I was curious to know if things are any better now.

Reason I ask this, is we have some pretty complex php/mysql for finding duplicate records (basically a huge address book, where a record has fields in 3 tables, personal, company and location)

It seems to be eating up the memory on the server and crashing. So, I was wondering if there might be a solution that would be faster, and thought maybe JSP which compiled to serverlets would be faster.
