Data Compression

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me, I am trying to find out the best way of compressing data files in the region of about 100Mb. The transmission medium has very limited bandwidth and would love to hear from someone who could point me in the right direction.

Depends on the data in the files. If it's non-binary type of data, you should be able to get it down to between 15 - 30 Mb using gzip.

You're unlikely to get it much smaller.

Thanks for the info Rincewind, the data we need to transmit will need to be encrypted with the new 100,000 bit encryption too, will this affect the use of gzip? The encryption may sound excessive, however it is very sensitive data, do you think they will work well together without any corruption of data?
