How do I save/import a mysql database from a web server to my machine (to which I have admin access). I need to convert it to an MS Access format.

When someone asks me for help and I see that they are a novice, I really try to help them and that does NOT include telling them to "rtfm". I take no solace in pretending I was born with the knowledge or somehow was just naturally smarter than everyone else and never had to ask for help myself. But that's just me.

Now now bill, we're not all rocket scientists, some people just don't know about flatfile dumping and importing.

A better answer would be:
You can export the mysql data into a delimited textfile that you can import into your access.
Look for mysqldump and SELECT INTO OUTFILE in the MySQL manual.

You have to do a little footwork when you have a question like this - otherwise you're just asking people to do your research for you. If it was somehow buried deep in the manual, or a trick or secret, that would be a different story. But there's a whole chapter of the manual devoted to this topic!

I didn't mean to insult your intelligence or anything, honestly. I obviously had to learn this myself, and maybe it's just me, but I don't like posting this type of question until I'm really, absolutely stumped on something, and after i've read all the appropriate documentation. Somebody spent a lot of time writing the mysql manual in hopes that it would be useful.

I don't have Mysql installed on my system nor do I have a manual. Didn't even know what Mysql was til' a month ago. However,I was given admin access to the server database to insert an updated database file taken from the volunteer centre every once in a while. With PHPadmin, inserting the text file into the mysql database is very easy.
I was wondering if there was a way to reverse this process and end up with a data only .txt file on my machine. I followed your response and all went well until I ended up with a .sql file (with data and structure) which Access didn't recognize.

I did follow the manual but I got a data.sql file as a result. If I had mysql loaded on my machine, I gather it would create a backup of the web database. But, what I wanted to end up with was a data.txt file. So I assume there's no way (without writing code) using phpAdmin to save a Mysql database from the web server as a .txt file on my machine?

Did you read about "select into outfile"?

Yes I did.
SELECT * INTO OUTFILE 'file_name' FROM tbl_name and restore with LOAD DATA INFILE 'file_name' REPLACE ...
I don't know what to do with that piece of code or what to run it with. It looks like I'll end up with a backup of the original data again and not a .txt file. I think I'll drop the idea til' the person who set it up is available. Many thanx, Vincent, for your kind attention and support.

Well, if you read this bit:

SELECT a,b,a+b INTO OUTFILE "/tmp/result.text"
FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
LINES TERMINATED BY "\n"
FROM test_table;

you should already have a .txt file containing the data nicely formatted.
You can change the format to suit your needs, but even MS products should be able to read it.
